Kilims, also pronounced gelims or gilims, are what we call “Flat Weave” rugs. They are the type of rug with no pile. Killims are definitely unique pieces as they have multiple functionality. They can be put on the floor, hung on the wall, used as a table cover, a sofa cover, etc. They are very thin and light. There are two types of kilims. One which is one sided and another which is double sided meaning that the design is woven on both sides.
Since these Kilims are thinner than a regular oriental Persian rug, they need more care and maintenance. A person who owns a Kilim needs to make sure the fringes and selvages are in good condition. Kilims also need to be cleaned thoroughly and professionally.
